Thèse en Pologne, sur les diatomés... (formation biologie/environnement)
PhD student position in diatom biogeography and systematics at the University of Szczecin (Poland)
Marine littoral diatoms are among the most ecologically important, species-rich and yet least well-known groups of algae.
The aim of the project is to study, in a comprehensive and integrated way, the biodiversity of benthic diatoms of the marine littoral, along the west coasts of Europe and Africa around the Cape of Good Hope, and up the East African coast to Kenya. The research will be done from a multidisciplinary approach, using natural population and cultures, taking into account both traditional (morphology by means of light and electron microscopy) and molecular taxonomy.
You will have the opportunity to investigate the relationship between diatom diversity and major climatic and oceanic regimes and the extent to which marine littoral diatoms exhibit endemism or are widely distributed or even cosmopolitan. You will work alongside a Post-doc and another PhD student in Szczecin, as well as an international team of specialists.
Requirements:
You should have a degree in biology, geology, geography or environmental sciences. Previous experience of Light, Electron Microscopy and/or molecular techniques would be valuable but are not essential. You should also have the ability to write and speak English, good technical skills, initiative and independence, and the availability to work in an international collaborative team.
We offer: 3-year contract with the University of Szczecin. Planned starting date: December 2012.
Application:
Send your letter of motivation, full CV and references to Prof. Dr. Andrzej Witkowski (witkowsk@univ.szczecin.pl) from whom further details can be obtained.
